Devon Removals

As a Director of Lanes Removals, in 1992, Robert Lane opened a new facility for Britannia Lanes in Exeter with his wife, Emma. Within three years this was extended to hold 600 containers and then in 2004, further development took place when a Self Storage facility was opened with more than 100 units, spread over 3 floors. This created an additional 15,000 sqft of storage space.

In 1998, Britannia Lanes of Devon were the fifth company in the UK to be accredited through British Standards BSEN 12522 for removals and BSEN 14873 for storage. They were also a member of the Self Storage Association (SSA). Britannia Lanes of Devon pride themselves on being a leading removal, storage and shipping company in Devon.

Robert Lane has been a Director of BAR Services for over 10 years, a company that is the main supplier of packing materials to the removal industry and is allied with the British Association of Removers, the country's oldest removal association. More recently, Emma Lane has become Area Chairman for the British Association of Removers having previously been Area Secretary for 10 years. Their daughter, Alexandra, has also joined the company and has been full time since August 2016.

The Devon branch has a fleet of 18 commercial vehicles of which there are 6 road train vehicles dedicated to carrying out long distance and European deliveries for all four Lanes branches, together with the wider Britannia membership. They have weekly deliveries in France, Belgium and Germany; with monthly trips to Holland, Spain and Portugal. Other countries are dealt with on a request basis. The majority of these deliveries are for private customers moving and also MOD personnel moving to and from Germany. Lanes of Devon have been carrying out work on behalf of the Ministry of Defence since their opening in 1992.

In 2017 came the opening of Lanes of Devon's fantastic new warehouse. In the last few years it became obvious that Lanes of Devon had outgrown their old site (as pictured above) and it was time to bring Britannia Lanes to the next level. They began the building of the new warehouse in October 2016 and the build was completed in April 2017. The new warehouse now has a fabulous new self-storage facility with state of the art security and over 28,500sqft of space, spread over 5 floors. The new facility has 10 outside, 24hr access, drive up units to compliment difference storage solutions.

The Devon branch will continue offering a wide range of services, including the following:

With over 5 generations of the Lanes family in Devon, they take great pride in their Devon roots. Mike and Sylvia Lane both originated from Devon, with Mike being brought up in Newton Ferrers where he helped his parents run a nursing home and farm. Sylvia was also brought up on a farm, but near Landrake, South East Cornwall and she also helped her parents run their grocery shop in Plymouth.

In the 1960's Mike and Sylvia moved to Cornwall to run a petrol filling station on the A30. Following the success of this business they started the removals and storage business in 1974. They are both now retired and have moved back to Devon, where they split their time between there and a home they have near Malaga, Spain.

We hope this history of our company and family demonstrate our commitment to serving in the South West.
