History of Lanes

For over five generations the Lanes family have great pride in their roots in Plymouth and Cornwall. Mike and Sylvia Lane, the founder members of Britannia Lanes, originated from Plymouth and South East Cornwall. Mike was brought up on a farm in Brixham and then moved to Newton Ferris where he helped his parents run a nursing home.

Sylvia was also brought up on a farm - near Landrake, South East Cornwall. She then moved with her parents to the Ford area of Plymouth to help run the family grocery shop. In 1965, once Mike and Sylvia were married, they moved from Plymouth to Cornwall to run a successful filling station on the A30 at Mitchell near Truro. In 1974 the company diversified to offer a storage facility and shortly afterwards they included removal services to a customer base covering Plymouth and Cornwall.

Mark, eldest son of Mike and Sylvia, with his wife Julie, now run this part of the company, together with the third generation Sarah and Matt Lane. Mark was born in Plymstock, Plymouth, moving to Cornwall with his parents and brother Rob and has spent a large proportion of his working life developing the business in Plymouth and South East Cornwall Area. This includes visiting customers on a daily basis to carry out pre-move surveys for private moves commencing in Plymouth and Saltash.

Lanes Storage & Removals Ltd joined Britannia Movers international in 1986 and became the Britannia member for Plymouth & Cornwall operating as Britannia Lanes of Devon and Cornwall. Mark Lane became a director of Britannia Lanes in 1980 and a director of Britannia Movers International Plc in 2007. Mark went on to become the MD of the Britannia Lanes Group in 2008.
